I am a self-taught, professional artist, working mainly in charcoal, pastels, and oils. My work covers a wide range of subject matter, and while portraiture is my forte, I am adept in rendering still life, landscape, and figure paintings, as well. I have had the wonderful experience of working as a portrait sketch artist, both at home and abroad, for over thirty years, sketching thousands of people during in live sittings in public places. The on-the-job training I received as a sketch artist has also been applied to a number of formal oil portraits, commissioned at various times during my career. I was one of the pioneers in establishing the small town of Clarens in the Eastern Free State, as an art mecca, by opening the first proper art gallery on the town square in 1991. The town, now a marked tourist destination, currently houses a large number of art galleries, serving its own sizable art community, as well as artists from all over South Africa. In recent years, I have done mainly commissions, while considering the possibility of one day having a fourth and final solo exhibition of my best efforts. I have lived in the rural Eastern Free State for the past twenty seven years, having a preference for a life of simplicity, solitude, and silence.

Lourens Oosthuizen currently lives in the picturesque town of Prince Albert, nestled at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains in the Karoo.
