Judy
Bumstead was born
in 1952.
She attended the Pretoria
High School
for Art, Music and Ballet and completed a 4 year diploma in Fine Art at
the Johannesburg
School of Art. Judy now lives and paints in Calitzdorp.
“My
work fails into two main groups. Inside paintings and outside paintings.
The outside paintings of the veld
and gardens and landscape and housed are untidy representational work.
Working in moving sunlight encourages speed and improvisation.
The inside paintings are concerned with the domestic and everyday,
I have numerous series of paintings ‘On the shelf’ are still life
paintings with real shelves - the art of still life painting being
rather ‘on the shelf’ in a world saturated with camera imagery.
‘Remembering Granny’ is about the elusive stuff of nostalgic and the
ghosts of memory. Most of my work is in oil
or mixed media (I’m very fond of found junk especially rusted
metal and wire) and could
be described as eurocentric, representational, domestic, post-pop
colonial eclectic paintings and constructions.”
