Bill Strapp was born in Pietermaritzburg and grew up on a farm in the Karkloof near Howick. He was interested in drawing from a very young age and was encouraged by his mother who enrolled him for drawing and art classes. He painted as a hobby for many years and has held many one-man exhibitions in various towns and cities in South Africa. Apart from art classes during his school years and a course under Kevin Atkinson (life drawing & design), he is mainly self-taught. He practiced his art as a hobby for many years, only devoting his full attention to painting, drawing & graphics for approximately the past twenty years. He has experimented with various media and different painting and graphic techniques over the years. He is extremely versatile and his subject matter consists of city and street scenes, landscapes, harbor scenes, still lives as well as abstract works. He lived in Pretoria for many years and later on a farm near Warm baths (Bele- Bela). He has always been fascinated by the Cape and Karoo and for the past 10 years he is living in De Rust, where he mostly spends his time painting and enjoying the beautiful Karoo scenes.
