Lisa Rowell

At my home in Constantia, I have a space I call Studio & Sons.

It is the ultimate privilege – being able to work full time on expressing creativity through various media, but mostly mosaic which has brought the most wonderful change to my life. The thought that I am building something that my sons can share in one day makes it all the more special.

My mosaic work is biophilic and I take inspiration mostly from indigenous flora and fauna. The plant and birdlife of Prince Albert is a particularly rich source – succulents, aloes, and fynbos are all so beautiful. I focus on the minute details of petals, blossoms, and feathers and aim for realism – with just a bit of whimsy. Mosaicing has also provided a natural channel for my other obsession – sharding – digging up broken-up pieces of porcelain that have lain buried for decades and decades, discarded so long ago that the Karoo dust has altered how they look. These beautiful, mysterious pieces of history find their way into my mosaics as a way of celebrating their unique beauty and the patina of their aged and crackled surfaces.

I am honoured to have my work represented at The Prince Albert Gallery.
